Daily Telegraph. Dargie was appointed an official war artist with the Australian Infantry Force in and produced a large number of military portraits. While digging a trench in Tobruk in he received news that he had won his first Archibald Prize. Dargie won a record number of eight Archibald Prizes between William married Kathleen Howitt in in Victoria.

In , aged 29, he was nominated as an official war artist. In that same year he won his first Archibald with a portrait of Sir James Elder. Aged 91 years, Sir William passed away in Melbourne on 26th July William Dargie won the Archibald Prize more times than any other artist.
